How long does it take to fully charge an EV?

It depends on battery size and charger speed. A 60 kWh battery on a Level 2 (7 kW) home charger takes roughly 9-10 hours. A DC fast charger (50 kW+) can reach 80% in about 45-60 minutes.

What is the difference between Level 1, Level 2 and DC fast charging?

Level 1 uses a standard household outlet (1.4 kW). Level 2 uses a dedicated 240V circuit (7-22 kW). DC fast charging bypasses the onboard charger for 50-350 kW direct current delivery.

Why does charging slow down above 80%?

To protect battery health and prevent overheating, EVs taper the charging speed as the battery approaches full capacity. This is normal and extends battery lifespan significantly.

What is charging efficiency?

About 10% of energy is lost as heat during charging. Our calculator uses a 90% efficiency factor, meaning you need to draw slightly more energy from the grid than what ends up in the battery.

Is it bad to charge to 100% every time?

For daily driving, charging to 80% maximises battery longevity. Charge to 100% only for long trips. Most EV manufacturers recommend keeping daily charge between 20% and 80%.

Why does fast charging slow down after 80%?

Is it bad to fast charge my EV every day?

Frequent DC fast charging can accelerate battery degradation over time. For daily use, Level 2 home charging is gentler on the battery. Reserve fast charging for road trips and occasional top-ups.

What size home charger do I need?

A 7 kW (32A single-phase) wallbox is sufficient for most EVs and provides a full overnight charge. If you have three-phase power, an 11 kW or 22 kW charger is faster.

Does cold weather affect EV charging time?

Yes. Cold temperatures slow down chemical reactions in the battery, increasing charging time by 20 to 40 percent. Some EVs pre-condition the battery when navigating to a fast charger to mitigate this.
