Free calculators for pet nutrition. Dog and cat daily food portions based on weight, age and activity level, all updated for 2026.
Pet nutrition is one of the most important factors in your animal's long-term health. Overfeeding leads to obesity, which increases the risk of diabetes, joint problems, and shortened lifespan. Underfeeding can cause malnutrition and poor coat condition. Our pet calculators use the Resting Energy Requirement (RER) formula endorsed by veterinary nutritionists worldwide, adjusted for your pet's age, weight, and activity level.
A dog's calorie needs depend on body weight, age, breed size, and daily activity. A 25 kg moderately active adult dog needs roughly 1,100 to 1,300 calories per day. Puppies require 2 to 3 times more calories per kilogram than adults to support growth. Senior dogs often need 10 to 20 percent fewer calories. Our Dog Food Calculator converts calorie requirements into grams of food based on the caloric density of dry, wet, or raw food types.
Cats have unique nutritional needs. As obligate carnivores, they require high protein and taurine (an amino acid not found in plant-based foods). An average 4 kg indoor cat needs about 200 to 250 calories daily. Wet food is particularly beneficial for cats because of their naturally low thirst drive. Our Cat Food Calculator provides separate portion recommendations for wet and dry food, accounting for the significant caloric density difference between the two.
