How is feriepenge calculated in Denmark?

When do I receive my feriepenge?

Under the 'simultanferie' system introduced in 2020, holiday is earned and used within the same period (1 September – 31 August). Your employer pays feriepenge to FerieKonto or directly depending on your contract.

What is AM-bidrag on feriepenge?

AM-bidrag (arbejdsmarkedsbidrag) is an 8% labor market contribution that is deducted from your feriepenge before income tax. This is a mandatory deduction.

Do I get feriepenge if I'm on a monthly salary?

If you receive a monthly salary with paid holiday ('ferie med løn'), you receive your normal salary during vacation plus a holiday supplement (ferietillæg) of 1%. Feriepenge (12.5%) applies mainly to hourly workers or when leaving a job.

What happens to unused feriepenge?

Unused holiday days from the 5th week can be transferred to the next holiday year or paid out, depending on your collective agreement. The first 4 weeks must generally be taken as time off.

Can I get feriepenge paid out when leaving a job?

Yes. When you leave a job, your employer must pay your accumulated feriepenge to FerieKonto. You can then claim it when you take holiday with your new employer, or in certain cases request early payout.

Is feriepenge taxable in Denmark?

Yes. Feriepenge is subject to AM-bidrag (8%) and then regular income tax (A-skat). The effective tax rate depends on your overall annual income and tax bracket.

How many holiday days do I get per year in Denmark?
